What we do

We help people and communities in North and South Carolina prepare for, get through and recover from disasters. Most of that work is building the relationships a disaster will test, county by county, before they’re needed.

Guides available now

Financial resilience education

Plain-language guides on insurance, documents, scams and the order in which disaster aid arrives. Workshops with local partners are planned.

The guides to preparing and recovering are online now.

Building now

Partner coordination

A checked record of which organizations can provide what in each of the 146 counties, and how fast. Once a county has checked partners, we’ll take requests from its emergency manager and recovery groups, reach the partners who serve it and track what arrives.

Planned

Community readiness

Tabletop exercises, partner briefings and volunteer orientation, so partners have practiced together before a real storm.

How partner coordination works

This is how requests will work once partners in a county are checked. We’ll post here when we start taking requests.

  1. We learn what each partner can do

What they can provide, which counties they serve, how much and how fast. One organization can offer several things in different places.

  2. We check it and keep it current

Every listing is confirmed with the organization and checked again on a schedule. A real delivery during an incident counts as the best confirmation there is.

What checked means: the organization confirmed directly to us what it can provide, where and how fast. We ask again every three to six months. We don’t inspect equipment, train crews or certify anyone. Each organization is responsible for its own people, insurance and safety.

  3. A county asks, and we reach the right partners

When an emergency manager or a recovery group requests help, we contact the checked partners who serve that county, with approval from our team before anything is sent.

  4. We track what was promised and what arrived

Then we thank everyone who showed up and learn from what fell short, so the next ask goes faster.

Where we fit in a response

  • The county leads.County emergency management leads the response. We act only when a county emergency manager, a VOAD, a COAD or a long-term recovery group asks us.
  • Official channels stay official.Your state’s resource request system stays the official channel. We help find nonprofit and private sources when you ask.
  • No unrequested goods or volunteers. We don’t collect or ship donations nobody asked for. We don’t send volunteers anywhere on their own.
  • Partners deliver directly.Partners deliver straight to the place the requester names. We don’t store or handle goods.
  • No cost. Our help is free to counties, recovery groups and partners.
  • Working with VOAD.We plan to coordinate with NC VOAD, SC VOAD and each state’s volunteer and donations team. We’ll list any agreement here once it’s signed.

How to ask us

We aren’t taking requests yet. We’ll open requests county by county as partners there are checked, and post how to reach us here. If you lead emergency management or recovery in a county, tell us about your county and we’ll set up a call.

What we don’t do

  • Emergency servicesWe don’t do rescue, medical care or dispatch. In an emergency, call 911.
  • Benefit decisionsFEMA, insurers and other programs decide who qualifies. We never promise anyone an award.
  • Speaking for governmentWe support emergency management. We never speak for a government agency or claim an endorsement we don’t have.
  • Individual requestsWe can’t take requests for help from individuals yet. These free services do.
  • PropertyCrisis Compass never buys property from the people we serve, and we never refer anyone to a property buyer.
